This lecture will examine the long-term changes in the ways that museums have been designed, managed and built in the post-war period, with special reference to the speaker's experience of working in three national museums — the Victoria and Albert Museum, the National Portrait Gallery and the National Gallery — as well as his time as Secretary and Chief Executive of the Royal Academy of Arts.
Charles Saumarez Smith read history of art at King's College and was Christie's Research Fellow in the Decorative Arts at Christ's College, Cambridge, before moving into the world of museums, where he has been Head of Research at the Victoria and Albert Museum, Director of the National Portrait Gallery and National Gallery and, most recently, Secretary and Chief Executive of the Royal Academy of Arts. He is currently a Senior Director of Blain|Southern.
