• 16:00-16:15 - Human rights: why a 'Just Transition' matters - Elizabeth Wild

Climate action is needed.... but it must not create or exacerbate injustices and infringe people's human rights. We want the transition to be just and fair. Every proposed adaptation, mitigation and carbon reduction measure should assess whether it could adversely affect people's rights. What does this mean in practice?

Elizabeth is a freelance business and human rights consultant. Her recent work includes the energy, mining and forestry industries. Much of her current work is on the Just Transition. In 2015 she completed a masters with the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership. She is an active member of the �鶹������Ӿ�Sustainability & Conservation Hub.

 

• 16:15-16:30 - Making sure "green" supply chains are just - Josh Matthews

Discussing through all the ramifications of, for example, a renewable energy or battery supply chain.

Josh Matthews is a Practice Leader at HFS Research for sustainability, and the energy and utilities industries. Josh is a former Cambridge City Councillor and shadow portfolio holder for climate change, environment, and the city. Josh holds degrees from Cambridge University's Institute for Manufacturing and Loughborough University's Chemical Engineering department. He is a former Process Engineer at TotalEnergies and visiting researcher at UC Santa Barbara.

 

• 16:30-16:45 - Tackling Deforestation through Community Land Rights - Natascha Kersting

More than 30% of people worldwide depend on indigenous and community lands to survive. These lands are held or used collectively, often under customary regimes. In forested areas, community land rights enable community forestry as a sustainable forest management regime. Over the past decades, the benefits of community forestry regimes have become increasingly recognised. Around one third of all forests globally are now partially managed by indigenous populations or local communities. We will explore these frameworks from a law and policy perspective by looking at the different stakeholders, practical challenges and the interplay between human rights protection and climate change mitigation.

Natascha Kersting is a Senior Associate for Law and Policy at EarthMedic and a Senior Research Associate at Cambridge Governance Labs. She is also a Red Cross Research Fellow at the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law at the University of Cambridge. Natascha previously worked with the International Committee of the Red Cross in Zimbabwe and Algeria and with the German Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York.

• 17:00-18:00 - Towards a Global Pact for the Environment - Alice Adami & multiple speakers from Global Pact

This event will seek to inform the public about the Global Pact for the Environment (GPE) project and the importance of the right to a healthy environment, which was recently highlighted by the campaign. The GPE, which has been under discussion at the UN since May 2018, seeks to recognise the fundamental rights, duties and principles that are to guide environmental action. Described as “Part II” of the Paris Agreement by its key initiator, Laurent Fabius (Chair of COP 21), its adoption would tackle climate change while delivering environmental justice. 

Professor Jorge E. Viñuales holds the Harold Samuel Chair of Law and Environmental Policy at the University of Cambridge and is the founder and former Director of the Cambridge Centre for Environment, Energy and Natural Resource Governance (C-EENRG).

Lionel Chami is Special Advisor at the Global Pact Coalition. Prior to this experience, he worked as a consultant at the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) in Beirut. He is a graduate of Sciences Po Law School and has passed the Paris Bar Admission Examination.

Dr Noëlle Kümpel, Head of Policy at BirdLife International, has over 20 years’ experience in conservation research, project management and policy, including five years in the field in Africa and Asia. Following interdisciplinary doctoral and postdoctoral research on bushmeat hunting in West and Central Africa, she worked for the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) for over a decade, on biodiversity indicators, co-managing the Africa Programme and then leading ZSL’s policy work.  As Head of Policy at BirdLife International, Noelle now leads BirdLife's support to international conventions and other global policy mechanisms, builds the capacity of national BirdLife Partners in conservation policy and advocacy and manages multi-million dollar projects in Africa, Southeast Asia and South America.

 

Alice Adami, PhD student in international environmental law, Land Economy Department, University of Cambridge and Global Pact for the Environment Ambassador. Alice is a UK qualified solicitor and her professional experience includes governance and legal roles for WWF and Aga Khan Development Network. Alice holds a master’s degree in international law from The Graduate Institute,Geneva and an LLB (Hons) in Law from UCL.

Jelena Solovjova - Graduate Law student, Hughes Hall, Faculty of Law, University of Cambridge and Global Pact for the Environment Ambassador. Jelena has previously managed access to justice programmes for the IBJ in Syria and holds a BA and MA from Sciences Po.
